“Once I stopped combining my Strength Training and Cardio workouts, I started getting stronger, building more muscle, and getting in shape faster.”
I’ve heard this from countless clients over the years.
It’s insanely common in the fitness space to have workouts that combine Strength Training and Cardio. And I don’t mean doing all of one, then doing all of the other. That’s totally fine if you want to strength train first, then do cardio second.

But if you’re doing some big mix of strength training and cardio at the same time, here’s what’s going to happen.
When you first start, you’re going to see great results—especially if you haven’t been doing much prior to starting the program.
But after several months (or perhaps a couple of years), you’ll hit a wall. You’re too exhausted from the cardio component to really push the strength training component, so you stop getting stronger. And you’re too fatigued from the strength training component to continue pushing the cardio component and get in better shape.

At this point, a few things will happen:
- You’ll get frustrated by this wall and quit.
- You’ll accept your fate that you’re stuck and just maintain your current physique, strength, and fitness level for years. You’re in a decent spot, though you’re not where you truly want to be.
- You push even harder, which may work briefly for a season, but you’ll just end up hitting another wall, or you’ll burn out or get injured.
I don’t know about you, but none of those options sound appealing to me.
Here’s the thing: when you stop combining the two—and instead, when you’re strength training, the only thing you focus on is good form, full range of motion, training close to failure, and adding weight/reps over time (progressive overload), and when you do cardio, all you focus on is keeping your heart rate in the zone you want to be in so you can get the specific results you’re after—

You’ll find you have:
- LESS Fatigue
- MORE Strength and Muscle
- BETTER Cardio
- AND You Start to Enjoy Your Workouts Again
And the cool thing is, when you’re giving your full attention to each one individually, a little bit of focused effort in each area will yield huge results.

That’s why we recommend our clients separate Strength Training and Cardio!
And to give you one more reason we separate the two at Steel… you definitely need someone coaching you on proper Strength Training, especially if you’ve never done it before. But you don’t need someone coaching you on how to walk, run, use an elliptical, etc.
So we maximize the use of our time with clients by doing Strength Training only at their appointments and having them walk or do cardio outside the gym.
